The Trolleybus Town Eberswalde is the district town of the Barnim district and lies in Land (state) of Brandenburg, approx. 50-km northeast from Berlin, in the Federal Republic of Germany. The trolleybus town of Eberswalde has 43580 inhabitants, of which 5909 inhabitants have foreign citizenship (as of 31.01.2026).

The city council has 37 seats, of which Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) has 9, Bündnis90/Die Grünen has 3, Bündnis Eberswalde has 4, Bürgerfraktion Barnim 1, Bürger für Eberswalde-BfE 3, Christlich Demokratische Union (CDU) 4, Die Linke 4, Die PARTEI Alternative für Umwelt und Natur 2, Freie Demokratische Partei (FDP) 2, Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (SPD) 4, Mayor 1 (as of 09.06.2024).

The distance between the Trolleybus Town Eberswalde and the German-Polish border is approximately 20 km as the crow flies. The nearest border crossings are Hohenwutzen (DE) / Osinòw Dolny (PL) (approx. 25 km) and Schwedt (DE) / Krajnik Dolny (PL) (approx. 50 km).

The federal highway B 167 and the country road L 200 run through and intersect in the town of Eberswalde. The federal highway B 168 also begins in Eberswalde. The motorway A 11, Berlin-Szczecin/PL, passes Eberswalde at a distance of approx. 5 km.

Eberswalde is located on the Finow and Oder-Havel Canal, both federal waterways.

The Berlin-Stralsund main-line railway runs through the town of Eberswalde, and the line railway Eberswalde-Frankfurt/Oder begins or ends in Eberswalde.

The town of Eberswalde lies in the Eberswalde Urstrom-valley, a geological formation resulting from the Ice Age. The surrounding landscape is rich in woodlands and lakes, on the edge of the Schorfheide.

The greatest east-west extension of the town of Eberswalde is approx. 17 km and the greatest north-south extension approx. 11.5 km. The total area of the town of Eberswalde is 93.5 km2.

In addition to all kinds of administrative bodies, such as the State Office of Criminal Investigation Brandenburg, Eberswalde is home to the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE). The Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE) offers 23 study courses in forestry, landscape management and nature conservation, wood technology, organic farming and marketing, sustainable tourism management, business administration and so on. Over 1,800 students are enrolled and 50 professors are employed there.

Within the scope of the expansion and renovation of the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE) two architecturally questionable unconventional buildings were built in the centre of the town Eberswalde.

Eberswalde is home to the metal industry, service, maintenance and repair workshops for rail vehicles (ODIG - Ostdeutsche Instandhaltungsgesellschaft mbH, Schienenfahrzeugwerk Eberswalde GmbH) and, formerly, the meat processing industry.

Founded in September 1977 as Schlacht- und Verarbeitungskombinat Eberswalde (SVKE), the Eberswalde meat factory was one of the largest meat processing plants in Europe. It was the largest employer in our district. After almost 50 years and several changes of ownership, Tönnies Holding finally closed the factory on 28 February 2026. The Eberswalde meat factory was located 5 km from Eberswalde in Britz.

Places of interest include the zoo, the Forest Botanical Garden, the Family Garden, the medieval churches, the old and new forestry academy, the old and new town hall, the Eberkran (crane named boar), the Adler-Apotheke (old pharmacy named eagle, the oldest half-timbered house in the city), the museum, the Finow water tower, the wagon lift and many other large and small monuments and architectural landmarks.
The railway bridge which was built in 1909, a town's landmark of the town Eberswalde, was demolished in 2004 because disrepair.

Around Eberswalde, there are several buildings worth seeing on the Oder-Havel Canal, e.g. the canal bridge over the Berlin-Stralsund main-line railway, the canal dam crossing the Ragöse valley and the old and new Niederfinow boat lifts. Other attractions include Chorin Abbey, Lake Werbellin and, last but not least, Germany's largest contiguous forest area, the Schorfheide.
